The Balance of Sun and Rain: Why We Need Both Good and Bad Feelings to Grow
Picture a warm spring day–sunlight filters through the trees, flowers stretch toward the sky, and everything feels alive. It’s the kind of day that makes you want to breathe a little deeper, smile a little easier. But what if every day were like this? No rain, no storms, no cloudy skies–just endless sunshine.
At first, it might sound perfect. But if you’ve ever seen what happens to a garden without water, you know the truth: without rain, things don’t thrive. The ground dries up, plants wither, and growth slows to a halt. Rain, though sometimes inconvenient or even unpleasant, is necessary. It nourishes the earth, washes away the dust, and makes way for new life.
And just like nature needs both sun and rain, we need both joy and sorrow, excitement and rest, ease and challenge. Our emotions, even the difficult ones, serve a purpose. They bring balance, depth, and growth.
Why We Can’t Have Just the Good
We often wish we could feel happy all the time. After all, happiness feels light, warm, and easy. But just like a plant that only gets sun, too much of one thing can leave us unbalanced. Without moments of struggle, we wouldn’t develop resilience. Without sadness, we wouldn’t fully appreciate joy. Without frustration, we wouldn’t be motivated to change or grow.
Difficult emotions–grief, anger, disappointment–aren’t signs that something is wrong with us. They’re part of the natural rhythm of life. They help us process experiences, understand our needs, and move forward in ways that align with who we truly are.
Welcoming the Rain
Instead of resisting our ‘bad’ feelings, what if we embraced them? Not in a way that lets them overwhelm us, but in a way that allows us to listen to what they’re telling us. Just as a rainy day invites us to slow down, difficult emotions ask us to pause and reflect. And it helps us to really appreciate the more pleasant feelings when they come back, too!
The next time you feel sad, anxious, or frustrated–or any of the other negative emotions that might be making you feel uncomfortable, try asking yourself:
-
What is this feeling trying to tell me?
-
What do I need right now–rest, support, action, or simply space to feel?
-
How can I be kind to myself as I navigate this?
-
What can I appreciate out of this (even if it’s literally just that I will learn something eventually)?
-
Who or what can help?
When we stop seeing emotions as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ and instead recognise them as part of a bigger picture, we find more balance. We realise that just as every storm eventually passes, so do our hardest moments. And when the rain clears, we often find that something within us has grown.
Growth Comes From Both
The most beautiful gardens are those that receive both sun and rain. The same is true for us. Every experience, whether joyful or difficult, shapes us. Every feeling has its place, and every moment offers something valuable—whether it’s a lesson, a shift, or a deeper appreciation for what comes next.
So, if you’re in a season of sunshine, soak it in. And if you’re in a season of rain, trust that it’s nourishing something within you, and soak it in too! Both are needed. Both are natural. And together, they create a life full of richness, depth, balance, and growth.
